Steven Heyer Bulking Up the Offensive Line in Oakland

When a National Football League team decides that they want to be ranked first in the division, the best thing to do is start picking up excellent players.  In preseason he Oakland Raiders was ranked twenty third in the League. As of today’s standings this team is now ranked first in the American Football Conference West division. One could say that a great deal of that current standing is due to the Oakland Raiders’ impressive offensive line.  The team’s line had been lacking in recent years, but an infusion of heavy muscle and talent has made a difference. One of the new acquisitions for the Raiders this season was offensive lineman Steven Heyer.

Coming off a four year stint with the Washington Redskins, Stephon Heyer has proven to be a valuable seasoned talent for the Oakland Raiders. This six foot six and three hundred thirty pound giant has added experience and bulk to the offensive line. Heyer has played left tackle for every institution he has played with since high school, but he is proving to be just as proficient at right guard.

Growing up in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Stephon Heyer did not express an interest in football until he began attending Brookwind High School. Once on the team he excelled so remarkably in his position on the offensive line, that Steven Heyer helped take his team to a state title and eventually found himself courted by numerous college programs. It was also at this point that the National Football League first entered his life, as the Atlanta Falcons actually helped him find cleats that fit his larger build.

Deciding to attend the University of Maryland was not only a bright choice for his football career but also for his degree. Stephon Heyer graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice in the same year that he was also an All-ACC lineman and chosen to play in ESPN’s All-Bowl team. Just a month after he graduated as a fifth year senior, Heyer also played in the 2007 Hula Bowl.

Although Stephon Heyer suffered a near career ending injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in his sophomore year in 2005, he went on to be undrafted free agent in the spring of 2007. The Washington Redskins saw the potential and dedication and signed him quickly. With the Redskins Heyer started an impressive thirty three games and was also one of the fewest penalty makers for the team.  When the lockout occurred in 2010, Stephon Heyer found himself moving across the country and joining a new team. The Oakland Raiders have not been dissatisfied with their choice, and Stephon Heyer’s future is incredibly bright in the Bay Area.
